Tonight (Friday 6th October) sees the inaugural International House of Puncakes, New Orleans' first live pun contest. 16 contestants will duke it out at the HiHo Lounge, using only their wordplay skills to win prizes. The show starts at 8pm and is free. Comedians Geneva Joy Hughes, Laura Sanders and LA's Sumukh Torgalkar will also perform.
Stand Up NOLA, the recurring showcase of New Orleans' best stand up comics, returns to the Joy Theatre tonight. The line up includes Tony Frederick, Leon Blanda, Geneva Joy Hughes, Laura Meagher, Alex Luchun and Matt Owens. It's an 8pm show, and tickets can be had at www.thejoytheater.com.
There are some special New Orleans comedy shows this Halloween weekend, starting tonight with a festive edition of Cult Following, "Oh, The Horror!" is a comedic exploration of cult horror classics like Halloween 3, Dead Alive, Re-Animator, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Suspiria. Saturday night sees 'Wait, What?' return to the HiHo Lounge, the comedy drinking game that gets the audience involved in the stand-up sets. Lots of visiting comics are taking part this month and there's happy hour prices to ease you into the game (8pm, HiHo Lounge @2239 St Claude Ave. No cover)
Sunday sees the weekend rounded off in style with Massive Fraud presents: Karatefight. As always, it's a comedy adventure with filmed sketches from comedy gangs in NOLA and around the country, live stand-up and general drunken shenanigans. On Saturday, July 16th at 8pm is their brand new show TV Pitchers at the Hi-Ho Lounge (2239 St Claude Ave). Hosted by Will Monson, it's a showcase of ten submitted short TV pilots, with the audience getting to decide which shows are cancelled and which shows continue, along with stand up from local comic Geoff Gauchet.
On Monday, July 18th at 9pm at the Broad Theater (636 Broad Street), it's the movies and comedy show Cult Following presenting "Totally Radical". The show features comedians performing material and games inspired by extreme sports movies of the 1980s such as "Surf Nazis Must Die" and "BMX Bandits". Performers include Lane Lonion, Duncan Pace, Andrew Healan, Jason Leonard (Lafayette) and Parker Barnes (Baton Rouge). Cult Following is hosted by Isaac Kozell.
